Surplus & Creativity: Design and the Readymade
2009 Sustainable Exhibition
2010 Bronze Best award winner
Surplus and creativity: Design and the Readymade was an exhibition of selected works from the first design competition organised by the Affect Centre for design Research. The exhibition was hosted by the Department of Conservation in Wellington’s Conservation House foyer space in December 2009 and included 27 works of art and design.
The exhibition design responds to the exhibition theme by reusing large storage bottles sourced from a local company's warehouse storage before they were sent for recycling. The obsolete ten litre containers and their packaging gain new life as structural elements in the exhibition and lived again at its conclusion. The cardboard was returned for pulping and the manufacture of paper, and the containers distributed to the community for emergency water storage.
The wall sections and plinths were modular assemblies of the containers and CNC cut cardboard to allow for easy recycling, and provide enough flexibility to exhibit the varied works.
